There are times, we get bored and cannot think of an activity to bond with our kids at home. Usually, we just go out to visit malls and pass by cinema. We spend money to buy things which we really don’t need. We tend to forget that there are other useful activities we can do at the comfort of our home. An example of one activity is planting.

Don’t you know that growing plants in a small garden with our children is a good calming activity? I can say adults are not the only ones who are susceptible to stress, but like us, kids experience this also at times. Perhaps, we just don’t realize this. They also get stress from schoolwork, especially when they have exams.

Through growing plants, we help them relax and forget the anxiety they experience with the daily tasks in school. By planting, we also teach them science in a fun way. In doing the planting activity, first, we must plan the things that we need. Maybe we should prepare the things we need a week ahead. How are we going to do this, anyway?

First, we must figure out the plants we are growing. Be it tomatoes, cabbage, potatoes, and carrots, all of these are good. Let us pick tomatoes as our subject plant, why? Aside from being colorful, they are easy to grow. I think kids will appreciate them more.

There are different steps in growing tomatoes, but here are the simple ones for you to remember:

  • Dig a hole twice the diameter and depth of the tomato root ball.
  • Pour a small amount of fertilizer into the pit. This could be from compost materials.
  • Place the tomato transplant into the hole up to its two top-most set of leaves. Roots will form along with the buried stem.
  • After you transplant, decide whether you are trellising your tomato, and which method would you prefer.
