Role models are people who act as examples by affecting others. May it be good or bad role models, these people contribute to how people grow. Exposing children to positive role models will most probably result in optimistic grown-ups. Showing children a problematic or pessimistic attitude will also result in negative thinking adults. Children are born with traits that are innate in them. These traits make up the overall behavior and way of thinking of children. Nature and nurture, the prevailing contributor will have the greatest impact on the growing child. But since innate characteristics cannot be changed, therefore it is more important to expose the growing child to positive role models. As parents, it should always be in our thoughts to serve as a good example for our children.
Children are exposed to a lot of role models in their daily lives. Aside from parents at home, all of their closest relationship whom they interact with every day serve as role models; their elder sister or brother, may it be their uncle or even the caregivers. Being a good role model could persuade young children to do activities they don’t like, for example studying or eating a vegetable or root crops like potatoes.  At home, even their neighbor who they see every day may affect their attitude.
In a school where they spend a lot of time in the day, teachers serve as their role models. Since teachers most of 7the time talk in front of the kids, this greatly influences the children. Educators must be extra careful in instilling learning for the children, they should also act properly and be an inspiration to the students. Even the school staff like security guards or janitors are not exempted as being role models.
Role models do not also appear from other people. Since children also spend a lot of their time watching television, fictional characters also do the job of affecting the children. Superhero characters, like Superman, Captain America are also being looked up to by children. Movie actors and actresses whose lives are now accessible through social media also act as role models for kids. It is very important to accompany our children especially when they interact with other people or watch the television. Children tend to pick some of the traits they witness on the tv or from other people, we should always be there to guide them.
To be positive role models, one must exhibit values that are overall admirable and appealing. He or she must demonstrate a positive outlook in life, must if not all the time remain calm in every situation. One must have self-discipline, heightened self-esteem, and of course be courteous to other people. Being humble is also a very admirable trait one must have to be a good role model. Children who are influenced by positive role models usually end up as good role models themselves. To grow up as good citizens of this society, teaching the younger generation with proper values is important.
