This summer of 2018, visitors, citizens, and tourist of Regents Park (London) will witness an unusual breathtaking sight of a giant penguin and a dancing hare as part of a sculpture art fair which is celebrated every year. Frieze Sculpture will be once again taking over the popular park’s English Gardens for about three months, to showcase the wonderful and different works of renowned 25 international artists without spending any money.
Clare Lilley, a curator from Yorkshire Sculpture Park said that the event allows the public to experience a snapshot of the fantastic and extraordinary imagination of the artists and variety of sculpture being made today. Opening this Wednesday, the celebration of the sculpture will bring together a diverse group of artist from around the world, including South Korea’s Kimsooja, India’s Bharti Kher, and Britain’s Larry Achiompang.
Lilley also told the AFP that there would be a geographic spread where the artist comes from South Africa, South Korea, Scandinavia, Europe and the United States. And in terms of age, there will be a nice mix as Haroon Gun-Salie, 29 from South Africa as well as the United States very own John Balderssari 87, will be there too. She also added that there will also be a lot of outstanding female artist this year which Lilley holds a very important moment.
The people can also witness and enjoy the artwork of British artist Conrad Shawcross called the “Optic Labyrinth” which is comprised with a four-meter (13-foot) high stainless steel installation with holes for the charmed visitor to walk through and get to personally experience and appreciate the art itself.
Shawcross explained that at first glance some may see it as minimalist, industrial, or austere but when you go around the art, the sun will go through it and it becomes alive, decorative and generous.
Last year during the annual Regents Park Art Fair garnered more than five million people from around the world to visit the inaugural event, which has two sister events – Frieze London which is dedicated to contemporary art and the Frieze Masters specializing in the art from the ancient ear and Old Masters to the late 20th century.
